Reflections on My 42nd Birthday: Lessons from Martial Arts and Life

Nick Castiglia a.k.a. Papa Nick Castiglia founder of Legacy

Today, I turn 42. It’s hard to believe I’ve been practicing martial arts since I was 10 years old and working in the field since I was 18. As another year passes, I’ve been thinking about some universal lessons that continue to resonate with me as I grow older. These are principles that have shaped not only my personal life but also my career, my approach to business, and my work with fellow entrepreneurs.

So, to celebrate this milestone, I wanted to share some of that wisdom (limited as it may be!) in hopes it sparks something in you too.

1. Your State of Mind Comes First

In both life and business, especially in an industry like martial arts, your well-being is key. You have to be okay first—mentally, emotionally, and physically. If you’re in a good place, everything else will follow suit. It’s not selfish to make yourself a priority; it’s necessary.

2. Family Is Everything

Your family and loved ones are your foundation. Build your life around them, not the other way around. The time, love, and memories you create with them will last a lifetime. In the grand scheme of things, they are the ones who will remember you most, and their well-being should always come first.

3. Focus Is Your Superpower, Distraction Is Kryptonite

The ability to focus is one of the most powerful tools we have. It’s amazing how the universe seems to align when you stay dedicated to what truly matters. However, distraction can derail even the best plans. Protect your focus fiercely, and watch how the world moves with you.

4. Forgiveness Is for Your Peace

There’s a saying I love: “I don’t forgive you for you, I forgive you for my peace.” It’s true. Holding on to hate or grudges will consume you, and over time, it will transform you into the very thing you despise. Forgiveness isn’t about the other person—it’s about freeing yourself from the weight of that negativity.

5. Forgive Yourself for Past Mistakes

We’ve all done things we wish we hadn’t. I certainly have. But I’m proud of who I am today, and I know that all of my experiences—good and bad—played a part in that. If you’re not where you want to be, keep moving forward. Let go of the weight of past mistakes, but take the lessons with you.

6. Set Goals, Write Them Down, and Review Them

This might be the closest thing to magic that I’ve seen. Writing down your goals and regularly reviewing them has a way of bringing those goals to life. The more I’ve written mine down, the more I’ve found them coming true. Try it—it works!

7. Surround Yourself with Amazing People

You can’t do it all on your own. Surround yourself with people who inspire you—friends, mentors, coaches. These people will lift you up when you need it and challenge you to grow.

8. Hard Work and Reliability Can Take You Far

Hard work, doing what you say you’ll do, and being reliable—these three things alone can make you incredibly successful. It’s no joke. These qualities have been more responsible for my success than any other factor. Show up, do the work, and be someone people can count on.

9. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a mindset that can change your life. Be grateful for everything, even the hard stuff. The challenges, the setbacks—they’re all part of your growth.

10. Your Tribe Is Not for Everyone—and That’s Okay

Whether it’s your family tribe, your friend tribe, or your gym tribe, your people won’t always be for everyone—and that’s perfectly fine. Focus your energy on those who are with you, those who are invested in your success and share your values.

As an entrepreneur and a coach for other entrepreneurs, I’ve learned how easy it is to get caught up in things that don’t really matter, or to be distracted by the noise around us. But these guiding principles have kept me grounded and focused on what’s truly important. They have rarely let me down.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey, especially the amazing team and clients at Legacy Martial Arts Consulting. This past year has been nothing short of incredible, and the best part is, I truly believe we’re just getting started.

Here’s to another year of growth, hard work, and gratitude.
